Assumption 1

Structural homeostasis is a function of the availability of energy and of the possibility of using it. Studies of mitochondrial pathology, the central element in cell bioenergetics, show that after the onset of energy damage (less free energy available), the phenomenology of cell damage undergoes a whole additional series of alterations that no longer depend on the initial factor but are the consequence of the energy deficit itself (cellular movement, ionic equilibrium, lipid and protein synthesis, physico-chemical state of certain macromolecules).

Mitochondrial activity itself is adversely affected by the energy deficit, and a point of no return may be reached after which the damage becomes irreversible.
